Meet the team

Rhys Clarke

Rhys Clarke is a semi-professional rugby player for Newcastle Thunder and has years of playing and coaching experience under his belt. An England colleges representative in the European championships in Prague, before making his professional debut for Gateshead Thunder back in 2009. Since then Rhys has gone on to play over 250 career games for 3 different clubs Gateshead Thunder, York City Knights, Whitehaven RLFC and full circle back to Newcastle Thunder who was formerly known as Gateshead Thunder. During Rhys career, he has been co-captain, captain and vice-captain of Newcastle thunder.

 

During his playing career, he has always been involved in grassroots coaching, working in several roles to get more young people active and involved in the game. Rhys is one of our lead coaches and has years of experience in managing projects such as women and girl’s engagement, Sky Try and is now overseeing the growth of the school’s engagement at All Stars Rugby Ltd.

 

Alongside this Rhys is also the head coach for the first team Gateshead Storm RL club, who plays in the national conference league.

Joe Brown

Joe Brown is the current appearance holder for Newcastle Thunder and the current Jamaica RL captain who have just qualified for the 2021 world cup for the first time in their history. Joe has played for several clubs such as Gateshead Thunder, Doncaster and Newcastle Thunder. During this time Joe has had the honour of being captain and co-captain at his various clubs.

 

Joe has a huge passion for the game and put a lot back into grass roots rugby by delivering a wide range of projects in various roles. Joe has been the lead on the Sky try project, Hitz project and oversees the growth of All Stars Rugby. Joe has a vast amount of experience working within pupil referral units and youth offender units, looking at behaviour change and engagement through sport allowing these young people to get back into fulltime education or employment.
